Atlanta Maternity Photographer | Erin

As many clients do these days, Erin found me on Instagram. She told me she searched Atlanta maternity photographer and when she saw some of my images she knew I was exactly what she was looking for. She wanted gorgeous light out in a field, and emotional connection between her husband, toddler son, and unborn son. We scheduled her session and she chose her favorite dress from the studio wardrobe. When she arrived she was wearing some of the tallest platform wedges I had ever seen. I think she saw the look of surprise on my face, because she quickly informed me she knew these weren't the best choice for our shoot location but that the height difference between her husband and her was the reason she chose to wear them. To her credit, she had no problem walking the gravel path or in the field. I still suggest wearing closed toed shoes if at all possible for comfort and safety reasons though.

Fun fact: Erin and I had our sons on the same day a few weeks after her session! I had promised her that I would let her know when my baby arrived so I texted her that afternoon to let her know he was safely here. We didn't know what we were having until he was born. She responded to my text message to tell me that she was in labor at a different hospital! He was born before midnight that same day. So, she's the only client I've had that shares a birthday with one of my children!

Atlanta Newborn Photographer | Reagan, 10 days new

Rosanna contacted me for a Fresh 48 session and a newborn session after she was referred to me by another client. She came to a studio open house to meet me and see the studio. 

When Reagan was born at home attended by Birth By Grace Midwifery, Adam and Rosanna let me know and I traveled to photograph her Fresh 48. I met several extended family members and it was just a fun family to be around. Before I left, we scheduled her newborn session to take place at 10 days of age. I like to schedule between 8-16 days of age, but often have newborns that are as old as a month! The older the baby, the bigger and less curly they tend to be. Reagan was perfect, and her mom let me know she wanted her to wear some tiebacks for her session. I have a wide array of dainty and neutral tiebacks available for my newborn girls, and use them based on client preference! Some babies startle more easily, but Reagan slept deeply for her session and was such a sweetie! 

While I love photographing babies and all their sweet details, my favorite part of newborn sessions is when baby is in the arms of their parents... exactly where they belong. It's impossible to do anything "wrong" during this portion of the newborn session and many of the photos that I I take are of you and your partner doing the things that you would normally do at home... admiring your baby, loving your baby, snuggling your baby. The difference is that your hair and makeup are done, you don't have a burp cloth over your shoulder, and the lighting is perfect.

Atlanta Maternity Photographer | Irene and Steve, a field session

This week I thought it would be fun to change it up a bit and showcase a whole year of sessions on the blog with one of my favorite families from maternity to first year. So many clients are interested in doing so but aren't sure what it would look like. This is a great way to see what to expect! 

When Irene contacted me, she knew she wanted a field maternity session, and told me that she loved the emotional authenticity of my work.  She wanted to have images to remember their pregnancy with their baby girl, especially since she had been unsure if she'd ever be able to have children. She and her husband Steve were looking for a photographer who was fun to work with and would help guide them during the session for natural interaction.

Irene is from Malaysia, and Steve is from the tiny town of Chincoteague (anyone else love Misty of Chincoteague like I did as a child?!) and originally met through an online dating website. They went on a date and then didn't see each other again for a few years... and then it all came together. Such a cool love story!  At her maternity fitting, Irene fell in love with one of the studio dresses and opted to wear just that one. We also talked about what Steve should wear from his closet at home.

The day of the session, we met at the field, and got to work. We laughed a lot and had a lot of fun. I know I say this about almost every session, but it's true. I work hard to make the experience fun and enjoyable! You're only pregnant with this baby once, and I want your maternity session with me to be one of the experiences of your pregnancy.

Atlanta Newborn and Maternity Photography | The Studio Wardrobe

Did you know that my studio has an extensive wardrobe that I am always adding to with high end pieces of beautiful clothing? These are some of the most recent additions. Studio pieces range in sizing from 0-16, and are carefully chosen for their beautiful colors, flattering cuts, and gorgeous textures that photograph well. All booked clients are welcome to borrow from the wardrobe, and roughly 90% of clients choose to do so for their maternity, newborn, or family session.

What if you don't want to borrow from the wardrobe but you're not sure what you should wear? No problem! Part of the experience of being one of my clients is having a photographer who truly cares about your entire experience. I will help you shop your own closet or shop for new clothing that will fit your vision and photograph beautifully. I provide you with a style guide and am available to answer any questions you may have. Don't think that you must only wear neutrals or a flowing dress for your session I love color and jeans just as much as the next person! The trick is choosing a flattering and cohesive look for the setting that you're in. What is MOST important is that you feel beautiful and comfortable!

Atlanta Maternity Photographer | Caroline & Ruben (and Snack Pack)

Caroline contacted me early in her pregnancy to reserve her maternity and newborn sessions. She came to the studio to visit early in her second trimester, and brought her adorable pup Snack Pack along!

Two weeks before her maternity session, she came to the studio to try on pieces from the wardrobe and decided on her favorites. All clients have access to the studio wardrobe which has a wide range of styles in sizes 0-16. Most dresses are based on bust size, not overall size, and accommodate your growing belly. Even if you choose not to wear something from the wardrobe, I still love to meet when possible and see what you and your partner are planning to wear so that we can make sure it's cohesive and makes the most sense for the location you've chosen for your maternity session! 

The maternity fitting is also a chance for us to get to spend some time together so when your session takes place you don't feel like you're being photographed by a complete stranger. I love getting to know my clients as people.  I firmly believe that a huge part of why my sessions are so much fun is because of the initial time spent together before the shutter even clicks.

Caroline also chose to add on hair and makeup services with Margaret, our HMUA, which I always strongly recommend. You're pregnant, and you deserve to be pampered. Why not make a fun day of your maternity session experience and then go out for a date with your partner after it's all over to show it all off? Margaret is incredible at what she does, and will make you look and feel like the most beautiful version of yourself. You will not look in the mirror and think "Who is that person?", but you'll think, "Wow - I didn't know I could look like this with makeup!" 

Some couples don't need much direction in the way of natural interaction because they just ignore the fact there's a camera there. That would definitely describe these two: I simply placed them where I needed them, and they took care of the rest. I loved shooting this session and working with this sweet couple and soon to be family of four. Here are just a few of my favorite images from their session!

Atlanta Maternity Photographer | Angela & Brandon

Angela contacted me to reserve a maternity session in the midst of moving to the Grant Park neighborhood, where my studio is located. They came in for their maternity fitting, and Angela asked me if we could incorporate her mom's scarf in their session. Angela had been very close to her mom, and had to say goodbye to her when she passed away from cancer. I thought this was such a wonderful way to honor her mother and make her a part of their experience since she isn't physically with Angela anymore. The scarf matched the dress she chose perfectly. When she wrapped the scarf around her standing in the field, we all teared up thinking of the special relationship with her mother and the fact that Angela would soon be a mother herself. 

Photographing Angela and Brandon was fun and relaxed, and seeing the love these two have for each other was very heartwarming! 

When I look at this image, I imagine Angela's mom giving her the biggest, longest, warmest hug. I know she's so proud of her.

Atlanta Newborn Photographer | Kofi, 12 days new

Kofi's mama scheduled a very last minute maternity session, and the morning of her maternity session informed me she'd gone into labor and had a gorgeous baby boy!  She knew that this was a risk with a last minute maternity session, and elected to transfer her maternity session to a newborn session in the studio. I loved working with their sweet family! The crown you see in some of the images was knitted by Kofi's grandmother and was perfect for their little prince, and matched my neutral setups! I don't typically use props other than wraps and very simple and dainty tiebacks for girls, because I want the focus to be on your baby and all their little details. 

Here are a few of my favorites from their newborn session. Kofi was such a sweet baby. I just love his hair and his little lips! 

After I was finished photographing Kofi alone, it was time for my favorite part of newborn sessions: the family sessions! These are shot with guided direction from me if you need it. My studio is the perfect blank canvas to capture these emotive and authentic images that you will look back at many many times over the years. When your baby looks at them, they will see the love you had for them and what that looked like. This part of the session is easy. It's fun, relaxed, and over before you know it.

Atlanta Maternity Photographer | Lindsay & Matt in the Gardens

Lindsay and Matt had just relocated here from Tennessee and didn't know of any photographers. When Lindsay joined a local online moms group, I was recommended by other members of the group.  She checked out my website, loved what she saw, and contacted me to reserve a very last minute maternity and newborn session since she needed to get in that same week due to her husband's work and travel schedule.  Fortunately, I had availability and was able to work them in! 

When Lindsay came into the studio for her wardrobe fitting a few days before her scheduled session, we instantly hit it off. We have very similar personalities and approaches to life, and by the end of our time together it felt like we were old friends. 

A couple of days later, we met at the gardens for their session before sunset, and took our time walking around the gardens. The most common question I'm asked is "What do we do?" The answer? "Love each other. That being said, I do help with flattering posing and guided natural interaction so you are not on your own there.

Did you know that I partner with an absolutely amazing hair and makeup artist here in Atlanta? Margaret has a key to my studio, and will meet you here in advance of your session. If you're a newborn client, she'll meet you when you arrive and get started while I begin the session with your baby. You'll hop up on the makeup chair, show her the dress(es) you plan to wear from the studio wardrobe, and she'll start her magic while you enjoy some refreshments from the studio fridge and snack basket. Your partner can relax on the couch while you're being worked on.  

This gorgeous mama worked with Margaret for her makeup, and the results are absolutely stunning. Kisha commented that she never would have been able to pull this look off herself, and was so happy to have everything taken care of for her. I can't wait to share the rest of the images from Kisha's session in the near future!

Atlanta Maternity Photographer | All the way from Nashville

When Amber contacted me a few weeks ago about reserving a maternity session in the studio, I noticed that her area code was for Nashville, TN. I found out that she actually lived in Nashville and was driving four hours to Atlanta for her session! This is not the first time I've had a client drive from several hours away to work with me (I've had clients from Michigan and South Carolina come for sessions with me), but I'm always honored when I hear clients want to spend extra travel time to have me be their photographer. Amber came to the studio the weekend before her shoot for her maternity fitting and to look through the dresses. She had seen several dresses already that previous clients had worn, and knew exactly what she wanted to try on. I think she tried on over 10, and selected a total of three. The following weekend she returned to the studio with her husband, and we had a lot of fun shooting her session! She looked absolutely gorgeous in the dresses that she chose, and I'm so excited to share more from her session over the coming weeks.

Atlanta Newborn Photographer | The transition to motherhood

I really love when maternity clients choose to book Fresh 48 and a newborn session like this mama did. Seeing the change that takes place from when they are expecting, to that first day of wonder and amazement in the hospital with their new baby after their world has been turned upside down, to the pure and completely indescribable love for their new baby in the studio ... it's really incredible to see the change in a woman just by her countenance. The transition to motherhood is clearly visible in the images that I take since my goal is to capture the emotional connection between you, your partner, your unborn baby or brand new baby.  It's such an honor to be invited to document these precious and fleeting times in the lives of new families.

Atlanta Maternity Photographer | In the studio

Laura contacted me at the last minute for a maternity session. She had taken a while to show in her pregnancy (a problem lots of us tall girls have, including me!) , so she decided at 36 weeks that she wanted to document her pregnancy. She decided on a studio session, and she came to my studio on Monday afternoon.

The first thing she did was go through all of the studio wardrobe options, and I made a few suggestions for what to wear. Atlanta Maternity Photographer | Happiness matters

When Myka contacted me at the beginning of the summer to ask about a maternity shoot, I was excited! Myka is the mastermind and entrepreneur behind WAX Atlanta, BLINK Brow Bar, and BUFF Nail Bar, which is over by the Krog Street Market. She also has one of the coolest lifestyle blogs over at HighBrow Hippie. I've been a client at Wax almost since it opened, and I can't recommend the salon highly enough. Myka's maternity shoot was ... in a word, FUN. Exactly how a pregnancy photoshoot should be. I'm not about the forced smiles or the fake cheesy poses where you look uncomfortable or awkward. I want to capture your pregnancy glow, and your real happiness and laughter. This is how you should remember one of the most special times in your life. I want my clients to look at their images and smile. Myka did just that when she viewed her images in the studio today, because she remembered exactly what her partner had said that she was laughing about and how happy she felt in that moment. This, my friends, is what photography is about for me. Emotional connection and powerful images to turn those happy memories into a tangible piece of history to hold onto forever. And when your baby is 5 years old, you can show them how happy you were when you were pregnant with them and how much they were loved and wanted before you had even held them in your arms.

Atlanta Newborn Photographer | Baby smiles and little toes

Sometimes I get lucky during newborn sessions and catch the hint of a smile. I know it's supposedly "just gas" but I'm not sure I really believe that. I think babies might actually have something to smile about… after nine months of being inside, they're out, and have snuggled with their loving parents pretty much non stop. What's not to smile about?

During my sessions, I focus on the little parts that make your baby who they are. Things like their teensy little toes (trust me, they are TINY… and you will wonder how in the world baby feet can grow as fast as they do), their little fists, eyelashes, and sweet pouty lips. You may think you can memorize your baby's every feature with the hours upon hours you spend staring at them in those first few weeks but I'm here to tell you, the mind's memory fades and is not accurate. I know this myself with my two little girls. I can't tell you how many times I've looked at their newborn pictures and marveled at how different they look than what I remember. I'm so glad that I have their newborn days preserved with a memories that won't ever fade away and that I can share those with them. It is my honor to be able to give new families the same gift, and the driving force behind my passion for newborn photography and why I shoot the way I do.

Atlanta Maternity Photographer | Waiting on baby girl

This couple was so much fun to work with, and mama borrowed her dress from my studio wardrobe which is available to all clients. My studio wardrobe is carefully curated and I have personally chosen every piece in it. Many clients are surprised to see that the majority of the studio clothing isn't maternity clothing but just has the room to accommodate a growing belly!

We met in the field that I love to shoot in just before sunset, and I enjoyed capturing their natural interaction. I can't wait to meet their little girl when they bring her to the studio for their newborn session sometime next month after she arrives! 

My maternity sessions are about the love and connection that you and your partner share as you anticipate your new arrival. I love being able to document such a special time in the lives of my clients. Are you expecting? You will only be pregnant with this baby once. Document it!

Atlanta Family Photography | Baby Harry

I first met Harry and his parents at their newborn session, and was so excited to see them again for Harry's six month session! He is the cutest, sweetest little chunk, and his parents are just lovely. We had a lot of fun at their session in the Atlanta area field that I love to shoot in for their sunset family session. When we were planning their session, I gave suggestions on what to wear so everyone would be comfortable and the results would be gorgeous on the walls of their home. When Harry's mama saw this first picture below, she said to me, "This picture is what love looks like to me." It looks like love to me too. This picture is what my baby and family sessions are all about. I want to capture emotive images of your family that document where you are right now and how much you love each other because that is what is most important.
