I first worked with Michelle & Kalyan for their son’s birth session, newborn session, and all his milestone sessions. I was so excited to hear from Michelle that she was expecting a baby girl and to be able to work with them again! We photographed Michelle’s maternity session in the park, and you can view those images by clicking here.
Michelle had hoped that I would be able to come to the hospital to photograph Priyanka for a Fresh 48 session, but due to some jaundice, it didn’t work out. I did go by the hospital anyway to visit for a bit and meet Priyanka before they were discharged. She was still every bit as cute in her little glow worm suit!
A couple of weeks later, Michelle brought Priyanka in for her newborn session. I took Priyanka while Michelle settled into the hair and makeup chair. Michelle has worked with a member of our HMUA team for add on services for every session she has booked with us and loves the convienence of it! Adding hair and makeup services to your newborn session does NOT make your session last any longer than the norm. I’m photographing your baby alone either way, so you may as well pamper yourself while you wait.
While Michelle was in the hair and makeup chair, I started photographing Priyanka. She was WIDE awake but so calm and serene, and I was able to photograph her beautiful gaze. I love her little beauty mark which is in the same spot as her mama’s. Once she was tired out, she fell fast asleep. While I was working with her, Kalyan and big brother Henry arrived. Michelle opted to borrow one of the shirts I have on hand for Henry, and picked a gorgeous peachy nude embroidered dress that looked wonderful with her complexion.
Henry was pretty standoffish from his sister and didn’t want much to do with her. His parents were a bit concerned that they wouldn’t be able to get him in any photos at all, but I have quite a few tricks up my sleeve. You can scroll down to see for yourself! I won’t give up my secrets here on the blog, but just know that if you’re concerned about your toddler, we’ll try a whole host of things. It’s important to respect your older child’s feelings and space. I never force my little clients to do anything, and let them lead the way. I’ve found that young children are much more responsive when I engage with them at their level and match their energy. So if you have a shy child, my voice will be low, movements slow, and I’ll give them a lot of space.
I also have no set flow for my newborn sessions that involve toddlers or older children because I photograph whoever is willing to be in front of the camera at any given moment, so I’m efficiently rotating through groupings constantly in order to give big sib(s) breaks in between. Sometimes babies need a break too, and we’ll take all the time needed for nursing, diaper changing, soothing, etc. We’re not in any rush, and I keep a low stress with zero pressure environment around here!
I can’t wait to see Priyanka and her wonderful family for her upcoming six month milestone session in a couple of months!
